São Tomé and Príncipe is a small island country located in the Gulf of Guinea on the west coast of Central Africa; It is made up of two main islands, São Tomé and Príncipe, as well as several smaller islets; The country’s capital and largest city is São Tomé;

The islands were discovered by Portuguese navigators at the end of the 15th century and were colonised in the 16th century; The country was an important centre for the production of sugar and, later, cocoa;

São Tomé and Príncipe gained its independence from Portugal in 1975; Since then, the country has been a democratic republic;

The country’s economy is mainly based on agriculture, with cocoa, coffee, palm oil and coconut being the main sectors; Tourism also plays a growing role in the economy;

The country’s culture is influenced by its African and European heritage; Music, dance and festivities are an integral part of São Toméan life;

Portuguese is the country’s official language, the result of Portuguese colonisation; However, many São Toméans also speak local creoles, such as Forro (Santome), Angular and Lung’le (do Príncipe);

São Tomé and Príncipe is known for its rich biodiversity, with several endemic species of plants and animals; It has lush tropical forests and stunning beaches;

São Tomé and Príncipe is a multi-party democratic republic; The president is the head of state and the prime minister is the head of government; The political system has undergone many challenges and changes over the years;

The country faces socio-economic challenges such as poverty, lack of adequate infrastructure and limited access to basic services; Sustainable development has been an important concern for the government and the international community;

São Tomé and Príncipe maintains diplomatic relations with several countries and is a member of international organisations such as the UN and the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP);

São Tomé and Príncipe is a country with an interesting history, a unique culture and remarkable natural beauty; Although it is geographically small and has a relatively small population, it plays an important role in the Gulf of Guinea region and in relations between Portuguese-speaking countries;
